10 Best Horror Movie Remakes Of All Time

9. Evil Dead (2013)

Let Me In Chloe Moretz
Tristar Pictures

This remake gets a few bonus points for sheer balls-to-the-wall insanity.

What starts out as a pretty straightforward reimagining of the original film, devolves into the kind of utter lunacy Raimi and co. could only dream of affording back in 1981. As a result, audiences got an Evil Dead film that was smart enough to hold onto some of the more classic moments from the original (like the tree sequence) but knew not to imitate it so closely as to just be a pale imitation.

The characters are also wisely updated, so as to recontextualize the events themselves. Whereas the first film was just about some friends staying in a cabin out in the woods before stuff starts going wrong, the remake features a group of friends going out there to detox their friend, Mia. It might be a bit on-the-nose, but having Mia literally fight her demons to rid herself of her addiction is an inspired addition.

The third act is where things really get crazy though as, for the first time in the series, the Deadites win. The Abomination is brought to Earth after claiming five souls, it rains blood, and Mia is left to kill the monster by herself. It's a bonkers finale that features the most blood of any film ever made and ends with Mia chainsawing the Abomination in half.
