10 Best Horror Movie Remakes Of All Time

8. The Last House On The Left (2009)

Let Me In Chloe Moretz
Rogue Pictures

Wes Craven's original The Last House on the Left from 1972 is a grungy little exploitation film. It was Craven's very first time serving as a director, a writer, or an editor, and thus, it is a film that is very rough around the edges.

This left the 2009 remake in the unique position of having the chance to improve upon the original film. And they did. Not only is it a more competent film overall, it also manages to make a huge improvement to the narrative by changing one factor. In the original film, Mari is murdered by Krug and his gang after they rape her in the woods. In the remake, Mari barely survives and is able to get herself back home.

Having Mari survive into the second half of the film is a brilliant choice that infuses the film and its characters with greater motivation and time constraint. After realizing that the group they offered shelter to is Krug and his gang, Mia's parents have to kill them quickly in order to get Mia to safety and save her life. And boy, when they kill Krug and the gang, they really kill them.

From Aaron Paul getting his hand trapped in the garbage disposal before getting the backside of a hammer to the head, to Krug himself getting his head exploded in a microwave, this remake goes all in on some of the most heavily stylized kills in slasher history and it works wonders.
