10 Best Horror Movie Scenes When Evil Characters Turned Good

When bad guys switch sides....

Dawn of the Dead CJ
Universal Pictures

Everyone loves a redemption story. In horror films, just like any genre, there is a hero and a villain that serve a purpose in the story. Naturally, the latter is portrayed in a terrible light in order for audiences to anticipate their eventual karma and comeuppance.

But to mix things up, writers will make these people go through character development to end up changing for the better during the course of the movie. Now we've seen good guys turn bad in films but the opposite is also very common.

This leads to individuals who may have started evil at the start but ended up looking heroic by the end of the film. Filmmakers do this to show how morality is complex and how terrible people can do good things just like good people can. Examples vary from doing heroic sacrifices to redeem themselves or teaming up with the hero to stop a larger threat.

Now keep in mind that the entries chosen here will consist of characters who are mostly villains during the movie and end up doing a heroic act later on. There will also be spoilers inbound for the films that will be mentioned.

10. Frankie - Daybreakers

Dawn of the Dead CJ
Lionsgate

In the 2009 film Daybreakers, vampires have become the dominant species on the planet while human beings are hunted down and harvested for food. The story focuses on vampire scientist Edward Dalton and his search for a substitute for human blood.

One of the primary characters in the film is Frankie Dalton, Edward's brother who was responsible for turning him. He is a member of the Vampire Army, the military group assigned to hunt down humans. Later in the film, his boss Charles Bromley orders him to turn his daughter Alison into one of them. But when she refuses to partake in blood and transforms into a monstrous subsider, she is executed by daylight which begins Frankie's change of heart.

In Daybreakers' climax, our protagonists are cornered by a large group of hungry vampire soldiers. Frankie decides to make the ultimate sacrifice by offering himself up to the creatures and subsequently, redeeming himself. Though he is devoured by the horde, his actions buy enough time for his brother to live.

And because he was turned human by biting Elvis Cormac, a man who has found the cure to vampirism, his death allows the soldiers to become human as well.
