English writer and director Neil Marshall showcases a cast full of strong, fearless female thrill seekers in his modern, cult classic The Descent, however, it's the film's main character Sarah who proves to be the ultimate badass. Although she first appears passive and mentally broken after losing her only child and husband in a horrendous car crash, Sarah overcomes her frailty; trading it in for bitterness and rage after learning that one of her adventure buddies had an affair with her late hubs and wounded her best friend, leaving her to be devoured by the cave creatures they encounter. Marshall does a fantastic job showing us when Sarah turns. After her dying friend tells her about the treachery committed by her husband and friend, we witness her first act of brutality as she literally stamps out a crawler and smashes its head in with her boot. It isn't until Sarah's final act, however, that we're really shown this isn't the girl to futz around with. Once she and her cheating ex-friend viciously snuff out a gang of crawlers, Sarah clues her former friend in on what she knows, injures her and leaves her for the crawlers.
