Few filmmakers command as much respect in the horror genre as George A. Romero, and so often people instantly think of Romero's 'Dead' movies when thinking of the director and his work.

Beginning with 1968's Night of the Living Dead, Romero went on to write and direct Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead before he sadly passed away in 2017 at the age of 77.

For the six or seven years before his death, the idea of Road of the Dead was gestating away with Romero and writer Matt Birman - to the point that the film was officially announced in 2015.

Designed to pick things up in the aftermath of 2005's Land of the Dead, Birman put together a screenplay centred on a remote island where zombie prisoners are forced to race cars for the amusement of the wealthy.

Rightly so, excitement and anticipation were high for Road of the Dead upon it being confirmed to be in formal development. But sadly, that film has spent the past five years in development hell.

Birman himself has talked of his hope of still getting the movie made. Even before Romero's passing, it was Birman who was to direct the film, with Romero having worked with him on elements of the script and story - and the hope is that this will be one lost sequel that somehow sees the light of day at some point.
