10 Best Horror Movie Villain Designs

7. Jason Voorhees - The Friday The 13th Franchise

Pinhead Hellraiser
Paramount Pictures

In the pantheon of slashers, no one has a better selection of face wear than Jason Voorhees. Even if you know nothing about the Friday the 13th franchise, you know the killer wears a hockey mask, and you will remember it until your dying day.

Every costume design is meant to give the impression that Jason is a towering force, so strong he can easily kill you. He did not choose just any knife; he chose a heavy machete. A hockey mask is another way to make Voorhees look more imposing; just like Jason, it is big, bulky, and hard. It extends him, and the more he gets bigger with each film, the more the mask fits. The more aged it looks, the more the mask looks like it’s made of bone, vaguely resembling a skull.

In a twisted irony, this mask humanizes the beast. No matter how monstrous and grotesque he looks, the thing on his head tells us that deep down he is just a child, shamed by the way he looks, and ready for playtime.
