10 Best Horror Movie Villains From The 70s

5. Carrie White - Carrie (1976)

Texas Chainsaw Leatherface
United Artists

Carrie White makes a very compelling case for a villain because she's also the victim of the story.

For the first two thirds of the film, Carrie seems more like a coming of age tragedy than a horror movie. The titular character does have telekinetic powers, but it's mostly forgotten about because of her abusive home life and the torment she experiences at school. It's because of her tragic backstory that we root for her to gain more popularity at school. In a dreamlike moment, Carrie wins the title of the prom queen and finally feels a sense of acceptance.

Just as she seems at her happiest, it's all taken away after the undeserved humiliation of being drenched in pig's blood. Sissy Spacek's performance is exceptional in how she can transition so seamlessly from a young, innocent girl to a piercing symbol of evil. Losing all control of her powers, Carrie brutally murders everyone in her sights, becoming an unstoppable force to be reckoned with.

Nevertheless, despite being the villain of the story, you'll ultimately always go away feeling a bit of sympathy for the misunderstood Carrie.
