10 Best Horror Movies Of 2013

5. Warm Bodies (2013)

A zom rom com, Warm Bodies explores the avenue of zombies feeling more than the sole desire to eat flesh. They also feel love! Those of you who have watched Zombie Lake already know this! R is a zombie who shuffles around an airport chock full of his undead mates. The living have erected a big wall to protect them from zombie mayhem. Julie has been sent to source medical supplies for the living. R is immediately attracted to her and eats her boyfriend's brains when she is distracted. He protects Julie from the living dead and in her presence becomes more 'alive'. The rest of the zombies are perturbed by R's behaviour and he decides to accompany Julie back to her home. He reveals to Julie that he killed her boyfriend and she tells him to get stuffed. R goes miserably back to the zombies who are changing - showing signs of life. The Boneys - evil, crumbling skeletons who prey on anything with a pulse are unimpressed with this. R and his mate M take a bunch of zombies to the human enclave. Can they convince humans that the zombies are coming to life? Can they overcome the evil machinations of the Boneys? Will R and Julie find true love? An amusing twist on the zombie genre, I usually like my zombie films dark and nasty but with Warm Bodies, I could find a measure of rich comedy and sweetness that really worked well. It was interesting to watch a zombie movie that doesn't end with the apocalypse. Warm Bodies starts with the Apocalypse and then reverses it - tearing down the walls of the city while Julie and R sit there watching them crumble down. Usually I have a distaste for rom coms, but in Warm Bodies, the premise of zombie/human love is too interesting to pass by. I guess the only film like it is Shaun of the Dead, another zombie comedy that has a happy ending. There is practically no bloodshed in Warm Bodies which is either refreshing or disappointing - it all depends on your tastes (pardon the pun). The film is well directed, well produced, well scripted and well acted. The Boneys don't look as convincing as they could and more could have been made out of the Boney menace (I was quite freaked out by them) but aside from that, Warm Bodies is a funny and interesting take on the zombie film genre and one of the best horror films of 2013.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
