After he had become a somewhat anodyne, wise cracking shell of his former self, prancing around with a wife and baby, the maker of Curse of Chucky (Don Mancini who has had input into every Chucky film made) wanted to return the franchise to its scary horror roots. Chucky arrives via parcel at Nica's house. Nica is paralysed from the waist down and lives with her mother Sarah. That night Sarah is found dead with a stab wound - presumed to be suicide. Nica is suspicious when the next day, a bunch of her relatives come to stay and one of them dies from poisoning after dinner. Alarm bells ring and Nica does some good old internet snooping about Chucky and his links to a dead serial killer. Chucky then reveals himself and runs amok in the house, electrocuting the nanny and slitting Nica's sister's throat. He tries to kill Nica through carbon monoxide poisoning and he generally behaves like a psychopathic little turd. The reason why he is stalking Nica is revealed and Nica is arrested for the murders as Chucky sits as bold as brass on a chair, watching the cops trail her away. Where will he be mailed to next and what mayhem will he wreak? I will spoil a little bit of the plot for you by saying that he ends up in the arms of a long time adversary.. A sequel to the film is in development and Curse of Chucky did very well as a direct-to-video release with a lot of positive critical attention. Chucky has certainly been returned to his scary, red headed, homicidal self of the glory days of the franchise, and it is about time too - before Chucky developed into a bona fide stand up comedian. He is back to being a malevolent little git, fooling people when he is in a state of suspended animation. Although why anyone would ever want a 'Good Guys' doll or tolerate its existence in their house is beyond me. Chucky looks sinister even when he is being 'cute'. Curse of Chucky is a scary film and it has rebooted the whole franchise for the better. One of the best of 2013.
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
