10 Best Horror Movies Of 2023 (So Far)

4. Sick

From one slasher to another; although there's more connective tissue here than just masked dudes with big knives.

Sick was directed by John Hyams, but written by Kevin Williamson. Those in the know will recognise the latter as a screenwriter on Screams 1, 2, and 4, as well as I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Williamson brought his pedigree to this new project, which is set in a secluded lake house during the COVID-19 pandemic. As if being stuck inside wasn't bad enough, there's now a killer on the loose.

Well, that's just great!

Parker (Gideon Adlon) and Mimi (Beth Million) are two best friends who isolate at the house during the pandemic. Clearly these two have never seen a horror movie before, because they quickly become the target of some home invaders.

Sick isn't just a well-written, well-paced slasher flick, but it also makes great use of its context. The pandemic plays a huge role in the film without ever coming across as tasteless, which is a seriously impressive.

If you don't mind remembering what life was like at the height of COVID, then Sick might just be the movie for you.
