Whenever a horror movie dealing with the supernatural or demons or paranormal activity is preceded with the line ‘Based on a true story’ it makes me want to roll my eyes to the back of my skull and bang my head against a brick wall until the mushy stuff start dripping out. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be scary, and when The Conjuring is scary; it’s seriously scary. Like sleep with the lights on and check behind the wardrobe scary.

Look, let’s be frank. You’re not watching this for the dialogue or the story. That’s all paint by numbers stuff. You’re here for the jump scares. Which in the case of The Conjuring some you see coming, others you really don’t and some you see so early you can go make yourself a cup of tea and come back just in time for it.

It’s demons, witchcraft and children ragdolling across the room like they’re glitching out of their garbs. The Conjuring is not trying to reinvent the genre, nor should it, so suspend your disbelief, ignore the whole ‘truth’ to the story and whatever happens to you whilst you’re watching, happens.
