This is a true throwback horror movie with more than a plastering of old school European gore. Down to its bare atoms, We Are Still Here is a story that could be a Lovecraft in a house that could be Amityville.

The set-up is pretty much what you could expect to hear in the first class of the module: Intro to Horror Film Screenplay Writing 101. There’s your typical New England setting of snowy edifices, picture postcard houses and places that are just that little bit too rural. A family in mourning, a house beset by unhappy spirits and an indulgence in the occult. Everything goes as expected.

Until partway through when someone flips the killswitch and then there’s hellfire and brimstone and bits of intestine up the wall. It gets gloriously bloody, indulgently so. There’s Carrie levels of hematic spattering. Full of flames, fervour and the spirits of a funeral home, We Are Still Here is a hoot that feels like it was made by people that really love their horror movies.

Sometime Brummie with a love for tea, tequila and football teams that don't win a lot of games. Still don't really understand apostrophes.
