2015's The Final Girls maybe flew under the radar a tad when it comes to mainstream audiences, yet those who checked the movie out were in for a treat.

A humourous, surprisingly poignant picture that poked fun at the slasher subgenre, Todd Strauss-Schulson's film technically takes place within a cinema setting - it's just that the protagonists of this tale find themselves dropped into the middle of an actual horror film.

In the opening scene, we see Taissa Farmiga's Max waiting for her actress mother (Malin Akerman) to finish yet another audition. Desperate to shake off the Scream Queen label that has followed her since starring in Camp Bloodbath, Akerman's Amanda is soon shockingly killed in a car accident.

Three years later, on the anniversary of her mother's death, Max is convinced by her friends to attend a double-feature screening of Camp Bloodbath and its follow-up. During said showing, a fire in the theater forces Max and her pals to seek safety by cutting through the screen itself.

The twist here, is that this group of youngsters find themselves transported into the Camp Bloodbath movie. While they have to fight for survival and a return to the real word, this also gives Max a way to spend some time with her deceased mother - albeit through the visage of Amanda's character of Nancy.
