10 Best Horror Movies Set In Medieval Times

6. Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans

Dracula Untold
Screen Gems

A prequel to the first two Underworld films (never normally a good idea, but it worked out pretty well in this case), Rise of the Lycans delved into the history of the conflict between the two Immortal races in the Underworld setting. In this story, we see the birth of Lucian, the first of the savage Werewolves that is able to take human form. He is raised by Viktor, an elder of the Vampires, who sees in Lucian a chance to create a slave race of Lycans.

Viktor's vampiric daughter Sonja falls for Lucian and the two begin a secretive affair, one that Viktor would surely forbid. As tensions grow between them, Lucian is forced to watch Viktor enact his worst nightmare and battle is inevitable.

Given the positive reception to the medieval sequence at the beginning of Underworld: Evolution, this film seemed like a wise next step in increasing the scope that this franchise could offer. Swords are cooler than guns, after all.

Building on the previous two Underworld movies (which were entertaining if nothing else), this one returns the series' best actors (Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy) to the forefront and tells a grand tale of revenge and brutal monsters. All good fun.

Still bitter that Star Trek Enterprise got canned and almost old enough to angrily tell the kids to 'Get Off My Lawn!'
