10 Best Horror Movies Set In Medieval Times

5. Solomon Kane

Dracula Untold
Optimum Releasing

Moving just a little away from the medieval time frame and closer to the action side of things, Solomon Kane is a rollicking and somewhat brutal movie about a cursed mercenary whose soul is claimed by Satan. As his past deeds of violence drive him, he seeks refuge in a monastery to atone, but is not welcome there for long. He sets out again and this time finds friendship with a family travelling the roads.

While travelling together, the family are set upon by riders sent by Malachi, an evil sorcerer. While Kane initially resists fighting back, he eventually relents and swears to enact vengeance for the family and rescue Meredith, the other survivor. Thus begins a bloody trek of slaughtered minions and measured payback as Kane swears to hunt down Malachi and save Meredith. Twists and turns about his own past and family await him.

James Purefoy, playing the title roll, gives us another reason to lament that he was never cast as James Bond, the excellent Jason Flemyng plays Malachi and the legendary Max von Sydow graces us with his presence as well.

Loosely adapted from the works of Robert E. Howard (who also created Conan the Barbarian), this swords and sorcery film verges on horror and magic, but is well worth a watch as it's great fun throughout.

Still bitter that Star Trek Enterprise got canned and almost old enough to angrily tell the kids to 'Get Off My Lawn!'
