Guillermo del Toro loves a historical horror. We'll be hearing from him again in a little while (exciting!) but for now, let's focus on his 2015 psychological spookfest Crimson Peak.

Set in 1901, it follows aspiring author Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) as she attempts to unravel the meaning behind the ghostly apparitions that keep appearing in her new home.

Sadly the Warrens weren't alive yet, otherwise she could have called them.

She soon learns that her new husband is behind the hauntings, as they are the ghosts of his previous wives. Why are their spirits so vengeful? It might have something to do with the fact that they were all murdered by his sister, with whom he is engaged in an incestuous relationship.

Just a theory.

Part ghost story, part murder mystery, part psychological thriller, Crimson Peak has other big names too like Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, and Charlie Hunnam. Plus, with del Toro behind the lens, you know you're in for a good time.

Don't believe us? Take the word of Stephen King then, who described Crimson Peak as "gorgeous and just f***ing terrifying".

And he knows a thing or two about horror.
