10 Best Horror Movies Set In The Past

6. Brotherhood Of The Wolf

This film is actually called "Le Pacte des loups" in its native French tongue.

Directed by Christophe Gans - who helmed the 2006 Silent Hill film, but don't hold that against him - Brotherhood of the Wolf transports you back to the French Revolution (1789-99) and then even further back to 1764.

It's told from the perspective of Marquis Thomas d'Apcher, who is writing his memoirs. He recalls a gruesome tale of misery and woe when a mysterious beast walked the streets of his home province.

In reality, the beast is actually a metaphor for the disgruntled proletariat who will one rise up and crush the ruling classes!

But, if you want to view in a slightly less Marxist way, it's a big wolf.

Drawing on classic werewolf fiction, The Brotherhood of Wolf also blends in the secret society elements found in movies like Get Out and The Conspiracy. It blends genres like costume drama, martial arts movies, and traditional horror to great effect - plus if you want to practice your French, then now's your chance.
