7. Pitch Black (2000)

Ghosts of Mars Natasha Henstridge
USA Films

The first film in the Riddick franchise, Pitch Black has emerged as a sleeper hit and a cult favourite sci-fi outing from the early 2000s. When the violent criminal Riddick (Vin Diesel) is being transported to prison, the spaceship carrying him and several others crash lands on a desolate world. There, predatory monsters stalk the survivors, who then call on Riddick to help them escape. Hence the tag line; "fight evil with evil."

It is the film that, along with The Fast and the Furious, turned Diesel into a star. Depending who you ask, Pitch Black is either a forgettable and mishandled slog or an underappreciated dark classic. Keith David, who starred as Abu "Imam" al-Walid in the film, has talked fondly about it, describing it as "a great ride" to Starburst Magazine.

Pitch Black' success started a multimedia franchise, including two movie sequels The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) and Riddick (2013), although neither is as fondly remembered as the original. A short animated film, The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury, was released in 2004 to bridge the gap between Pitch Black and Chronicles. A highly praised video game, titled The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, came out in 2004.
