Michael Dougherty's Trick 'r Treat is as Halloween as a horror film can get, and it may be as good as the usually uneven anthology format can get, owing much to the unity of a single writer-director and talented cast that includes Dylan Baker, Anna Paquin and Brian Cox.
Set in the fictional Warren Valley on one fateful Halloween night, the film takes us into the lives of a diverse cross-section of the town's inhabitants, all sewn together by the little pumpkin man Sam, who watches over his hallowed night and makes sure nothing goes awry. This includes brutally savaging those who refuse to fully participate in the seasonal festivities - but everyone's got to have a hobby.
Trick 'r Treat dips into four main stories, barrelling through stories of a murderous school principal, a haunted lake, a werewolf initiation and the very spirit of Halloween in just 82 minutes. The stories weave together into a slipknot and, somehow, the film manages to turn murder and mayhem into a strangely uplifting affair, with every death contributing a little something extra to this most sacred night of horror.
