A cult gem from 1973, Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now is an existential fever dream of grief and violence. Adapted from a short story by Daphne du Maurier, the film follows John (Donald Sutherland) and Laura (Julie Christie) Baxter attempt to reconnect in Venice after the sudden death of their young daughter, who drowned in the family’s garden pond.

However, after being told by a woman claiming to be clairvoyant that their daughter is trying to contact them, John starts believing he's having premonitions about his daughter too. Seeing a small figure wearing the same bright red raincoat as his daughter did when she died, he desperately tries to reach out to her.

Although it may sound like this film falls into the supernatural category given its focus on premonitions and a possible ghost girl, the reality is far grimmer. In a gut punch of an ending, it’s revealed that the figure John has been chasing wasn’t the ghost of his daughter, but a strange woman who’s been killing people around the city.

Presented in a jarring series of edits and misdirects, Don’t Look Now requires viewers to look again to spot every clue Roeg seeds throughout his film.
