While visiting their lavish lakeside home for a vacation, Ann (Naomi Watts) and George (Tim Roth) Farber alongside their son (Devon Gearhart) are visited by the mild-mannered Peter (Brady Corbet), who asks to borrow some eggs for the family next door. Moments later, after Peter knocks Ann’s phone in the sink, he’s joined by accomplice Paul (Michael Pitt).

Continuing to terrorise the family, they force them to participate in a number of sadistic games, betting that they’ll have killed them all by the next morning.

This is Michael Haneke’s Funny Games, a shot-for-shot, English-language remake of his own 1997 film of the same name. Although this film has been criticised for being too heavy-handed in lecturing viewers on its mindless violence, the film has nevertheless achieved a cult status for its wry and subversive deconstruction of the home invasion genre.

Without showing any of the violence onscreen, Haneke’s methodical direction creates a palpably cold and bleak atmosphere. Likewise, our psychotic villains constantly break the fourth wall with knowing winks to viewers, and, in one implausible scene, even break the rules of the film itself to show that they have complete control over the horrific situation at hand.
