7. The Ritual (Netflix)

Train To Busan
eOne

A long lost brother to the Blair Witch story, The Ritual feels like a fresh new take on the found footage classic done with shiny new studio cinematography and an all male cast getting lost in the woods. When a group of friends go hiking in the Scandinavian wilderness, their chances of ever coming out again are slimmed exceptionally by taking a 'shortcut', one that leads directly into the home of a dark Norse legend.

The Ritual is fantastic for its original take on monster design, creating something never seen before in meticulous, inspired detail that serves its plot incredibly well. Paired with traumatic flashbacks and a strange, compelling force lurking underneath everything in the bleak woodland, and the film becomes something surprisingly engaging for what appears on the surface to be another stupid group of folk getting lost in forests they don't belong in.

It's weird, it's wonderful, and it's worth a watch if you haven't caught it by now on Netflix.

Titles relating to original monsters & woodland horror: Blair Witch, The Hallow, The Witch.
