4. Freaks

Whilst Freaks has been a controversial title for many years now, its hallmarking as an important piece of cinema has opened it up to modern criticisms in a new way, with watchers able to find merit in its purposefully debatable content. How comfortable you are with the film depends on your propensity for its subject matter, which sees a group of 'circus freaks' band together to enact revenge on a gold digging trapeze artist that intends to exploit a wealthy member of their group.

Coming before blanket guidelines for film production were enforced for censorship, Freaks manages to get away with a lot for its time - slowly devolving into a horrific depiction of brutality against the reprehensible woman that attempts to unravel the troupe. Freaks is intense, unsettling, and the ending is one that will stick with you long after viewing, and it relies on a fate far worse than death to capitalise on these qualities.
