One of Stephen King's finer psychological works, considering just how violent the haunted room 1408 of The Dolphin hotel gets you'd have expected paranormal investigator Mike to well and truly have kicked the bucket - but no such luck. No matter what the nasty four walls of 1408 throw out, Mike manages to overcome terrors of both his own mind and the buildings past, fighting back against a mental torrent of abuse born from a room that is undoubtedly pure evil.

The story is a simple one - unconvinced by tales a haunted hotel's prowess, a skeptic decides to prove that The Dolphin hotel is like any other, but gets a nasty shock when he learns that the fabled room of 1408 has a bite far worse than its bark.

Whilst the alternate endings might change its status since there's other fates that can befall Mike, the mainline entry sees him survive the room by application of some ingenious physics, using the rooms own smarts against it. It's well worth a watch through the various other choices to decide which is your favourite, but for the purposes here, 1408's standard run through works exceptionally well.
