7. Let The Right One In

Few movie monsters have featured as prominently as the vampire, and it can seem like there are no fresh approaches to the bloodsucker. Swedish instant classic Let The Right One In proved this wrong - it’s a swooning and sad story with the requisite bloodletting and genuinely startling gore.

Let The Right One In is a boy meets girl story, only in this instance the boy is meek, bullied Oskar, and the girl is Eli, a centuries-old vampire trapped in the body of a young teen. In another film with a similar concept, Eli would be fighting against her bloodthirsty instincts - not here. Tomas Alfredson’s film focuses primarily on the forbidden relationship between mortal and immortal, but when the violence comes, it’s explosive, and all the more shocking for the stately restraint shown elsewhere.

The film takes its concept seriously, playing out a bold tragedy beautifully acted by the young stars Kåre Hedebrant and Lina Leandersson. It’s an unpredictable and daring smash that really didn’t need a US remake (though that version’s not actually too bad).
