A suspenseful, unique and intellectual horror drama, The Addiction is a powerful, blood-soaked allegory to sin and drug addiction. Abel Ferrara's film follows the introverted philosophy graduate Kathleen Conklin, who is attacked and bitten by a female vampire known simply as Casanova.

She develops a longing for human blood, an addiction that leads to grisly encounters and which will consume her humanity if she allows it to overcome her.

Ferrara's full stylistic range is on show in The Addiction. Provocative, at times controversial content, along with a neo-noir urban setting, are on full display. Most striking however is a key overturning of the vampire story, one that has since been featured in a slew of horror stories - human victims willingly submitting to being bitten.

The Addiction is not necessarily the first film to ever feature this, but voluntary vampirism has since been featured in everything from Buffy The Vampire Slayer to the novel Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler.

The Addiction is a thoughtful and intelligent vampire story that pulls no punches and asks serious questions about what being human truly involves. It's completed by a stellar cast that features Lili Taylor, Annabella Sciorra, and Christopher Walken among others.
