7. The Lodgers (2017)

The Hole In The Ground
Epic Pictures Group

Penned by Irish literature professor David Turpin, The Lodgers is an unnerving gothic ghost story set in the aftermath of the Irish War Of Independence. It transports audiences to a dishevelled manor where orphaned twins Rachel (Charlotte Vega) and Edward (Bill Milner) live alone.

They’re bound to the family home by a curse and must abide by a set of strict rules or face the wrath of an unseen presence which dwells underneath the house. But when Rachel is overcome with a desire to leave, the siblings’ lives are thrown into disarray.

Complete with a muted colour palette dominated by icy blues and dreary greys, The Lodgers embraces its gothic aesthetic to the fullest. Moreover, the film’s setting is given an added sense of realism by being shot in Loftus Hall, a 700-year-old Irish manor house which is said to be haunted.

The oppressive setting is the driving force behind this film. Every darkened corner is filled with a tragic history and menacing presence which never feels too far away. As more is revealed about the family’s curse, disturbing revelations are uncovered and events grow ever stranger
