5. Extra Ordinary (2019)
Written and directed by filmmaking duo Mike Ahern and Edna Loughman in their extraordinary feature debut, Extra Ordinary is a delightful hidden gem full of personality and ghosts.
Rose (Maeve Higgins) is a bubbly driving instructor with paranormal abilities which she inherited form her late father. But after her father’s death (which she was partially responsible for), she decides never to use her gifts again. But everything changes when she meets mild-mannered widower Martin (Barry Ward) who requests her help exorcising the spirit of his late wife.
Meanwhile, a washed-up singer (30 Rock’s Will Forte) has moved into the area. He’ll do anything to reignite his career including calling upon Satan himself, and Martin’s teenage daughter (Emma Coleman) becomes his sacrificial target. Chaos and hilarity follow as Rose and Martin work together to find a way to break the spell holding his daughter.
Higgins and Ward’s chemistry is a large part of what makes this film special. Both actors pour plenty of heart into their respective roles that it’s impossible not to instantly fall for them. No matter how bonkers their situation gets, they ensure that their burgeoning relationship stays grounded throughout.
