10 Best Jump Scares From 2024’s Biggest Horror Movies
8. Rooftop Walker - Immaculate
Michael Mohan's religious horror revolves around Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), a newly converted nun who moves into an Italian convent hoping to find her true calling.
When she falls pregnant despite never having sex, Cecilia starts being revered by the Sisters in the same vein as the Virgin Mary. But as Cecilia notices strange activities in the convent, she suspects something demonic is growing inside of her.
Despite the fact Immaculate has a great premise, it relies far too much on shock scares that are telegraphed and forced, making them come across as annoying rather than frightening. But since Immaculate is overflowing with jump-scares, it was bound to get at least one right.
While Cecilia is walking through the cloister, a nun, Isabelle, can be observed on the rooftop in the distance. The background is deliberately unfocused in this shot, so it's hard to spot Isabelle on a first viewing, making it more startling when she plummets to the ground.
Even though most of Immaculate's jump-scares are built up too much to be dramatic, this moment works perfectly due to its subtlety, efficient use of sound, and abruptness.
