7. Heads Up, Dean - Abigail

The Strangers Chapter 1
Universal Pictures

Inspired by Dracula's Daughter, this horror-comedy follows a group of mercenaries who kidnap a dainty ballerina called Abigail, oblivious that she's a vampire. Before long, the pirouetting vamp is chomping necks and sucking her victims dry.

Though there are plenty of uber-violent sequences involving stake impalements and exploding in sunlight, the first kill is Abigail's most shocking. While waiting for the ransom to be paid, Dean (played by the late Angus McCloud) enters the basement to get a snack. With no warning, Dean is attacked by an unseen assailant before being dragged off-screen.

When Dean doesn't return, the hacker of the group Sammy (Kathryn Newton) heads downstairs to investigate. As she approaches the kitchen, she spots Dean sitting on the table from behind, completely motionless.

Based on what has already been shown and how this shot is positioned, it's obvious Dean is dead. However, it's still unexpected how Dean's death is unveiled, as when Sammy enters the room his entire head flops off his shoulders, causing her to instinctively grab it and gaze upon his dismembered body.

It was obvious something like this was going to happen but this reveal still threw a lot of people off.
