10 Best Jump Scares From 2024’s Biggest Horror Movies
3. The Claw - The First Omen
Considering there's never been a solid follow-up to The Omen, nobody was particularly pining for a prequel. Against the odds, though, Arkasha Stevenson's The First Omen turned out far better than anyone expected.
The First Omen tells a thought-provoking story, expanding on the existing lore, and taking its time setting up every scare. And above all else, The First Omen has some of the most WTF imagery of 2024.
While volunteering at an orphanage, religious novice Margaret grows increasingly suspicious of the nuns and priests she's working with. After discovering the facility takes in women who've fallen pregnant out of wedlock, Margaret heads into a secret chamber where she sees one of the young girls giving birth.
Since The First Omen doesn't have an NC-17 rating, it's safe to assume the shot isn't going to be overly graphic. Though there are split-second shots of the women's nether regions, they're often obscured. That is, until suddenly there's a vivid shot of what appears to be a baby's head crowning. But as the "head" splits open, it's revealed to be a black, bony claw drenched in oily goo.
The First Omen has plenty of sickening visuals, but this shot is the film's crowning achievement (no pun intended).
