10 Best Jump Scares From 2024’s Biggest Horror Movies

2. Minnie's Appearance - Late Night With The Devil

The Strangers Chapter 1
IFC Films

Inspired by the BBC mockumentary Ghostwatch, Cameron and Colin Cairnes' twisted tale centres around late-night TV host Jack Delroy (David Dastmalchian), who agrees to interview a possessed girl in the hope of boosting ratings.

Late Night with the Devil has been touted as one of the smartest films of the year, and with good reason. It perfectly blends found-footage with behind-the-scenes filmmaking, doesn't waste a single line of dialogue, and every actor nails their role, especially Dastmalchian.

This supernatural horror also highlights that jump-scares don't need to be loud or stretched out to be terrifying, as many of the creepiest moments are quiet and quick, urging viewers to second-guess what they saw. However, one hair-raising moment destined to have a lasting effect is when Jack studies the footage of the possessed girl frame-by-frame, believing he saw a hidden image.

Sure enough, the ghost of his wife, Minnie, appears behind Jack during one frame, her hand gently placed on his shoulder. And as nerve-jangling as this moment is, it's not over, as why settle for one jump-scare when you can have two?

Immediately after this moment, the camera cuts to a close-up of Jack, with Minnie's discoloured hand still clasped over his shoulder. Although Minnie is impossible to miss in the freeze-frame, her appearance in the following shot lasts less than a second, so it's hard to tell whether she was actually there or not, making it more unnerving.
