10 Best Legacy Movie Sequels Ever
7. The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Set some sixty years after Matrix Revolutions, The Matrix Resurrections follows Neo and Trinity as their seemingly ordinary lives are thrown into turmoil by a new enemy that threatens both them and the world.
Bracingly fast-paced, funny, and inventive, Resurrections allows Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss to slip effortlessly back into their most famous roles, whilst adding a wonderfully fresh, self-aware spin on the lore mapped-out by the preceding trilogy.
There are some issues - mainly the lack of Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving, and some questionable special effects - but the film's inventive worldbuilding and compelling characterisation makes it an absolute thrill-ride, at once a unique action flick and an emotional send-off to two era-defining heroes.
Resurrections may not reach the highs of the original (what could?), but it makes itself its own with great results all the same.
