9. Gintama Live Action The Movie

Alita Battle Angel
Warner Bros. Pictures

Sometimes, you just need something irreverent that mocks the genre and its clichés. Gintama, as an anime, does this. It's a fun series that breaks the fourth wall and lovingly parodies the genre in exciting and creative ways. The movie itself is an excellent continuation of this, as it doesn't take itself seriously and did well enough to earn a sequel.

The movie follows a young samurai named Gintoki Sakata, as he works freelance alongside his friends in a version of feudal Japan that has been invaded by aliens. The blend of historical imagery and luscious sci-fi is such a contrast, but the movie's incredibly goofy tone makes it work perfectly.

Even if ignoring the hilarious comedy side of this movie, you'll still get a worthwhile experience thanks to the compelling visuals. The fight scenes, VFX and general costume design, is spectacular, as everything is dripping with personality. Plus, the action is thunderous, with some utterly compelling sequences and incredible set-ups, like a paramilitary revolution and a serial killer on the loose.

It's a wild and bombastic film, making it feel perfectly at home as an anime come to life.
