8. Death Note (2006)

Part of what made Netflix's 2017 Death Note movie so awful - aside from the misunderstanding of the source material - was the fact that we already had proof a live-action Death Note could work. The adaptation from 2006 brought a lot of the show's signature charm to the big-screen and is a truly worthwhile experience.

Death Note - and its subsequent sequel Death Note: The Last Name - follows the exploits of Light Yagami, a young student who comes into possession of a notebook that causes death to anyone whose name is written in it. He begins to use this to cleanse the world of evil but doesn't realise that his own morality is in question.

Soon, the film devolves into a battle of wits between two of the world's greatest minds, the previously mentioned Light and a brilliant young detective known as L, as each one attempts to outsmart the other.

Just like the original series, it's a compelling game of cat and mouse that sees intellect take priority over spectacle. This makes the movie and its macabre visual tones an utterly enthralling experience, as you feel like your constantly witnessing a chess match between two people, except that the pieces they're playing with are human lives.
