Dark Waters is a legal drama that tells the real-life story of environmental lawyer Robert Bilott, who brought a case against a corporation called DuPont after they contaminated a town with dangerous chemicals. It's a scathing and meticulously detailed drama that perfectly captures the frustrations and hypocrisy of big corporations, whilst also shedding some light on the people who tried to put things right.
At the centre of the film is Mark Ruffalo, portraying Bilott as a man with an unwavering moral compass willing to stick his neck out to do the right thing. He is at once levelheaded, enraged, and disillusioned, but throughout the film never gives up on his goal.
Between the legal drama and thriller-like pace, Dark Waters is at its core a character study analysing the heart and soul of a good man caught in a bad world. With Ruffalo leading the way, that message shines through with every scene.
