It's hard now for fans to remember a time when a character like Iron Man was a gamble, but before his movie adaptation was released, the hero was a relatively minor character in comparison with the big guns like Spider-Man and Wolverine. Marvel Studios had a lot riding on the success of Iron Man, their first step towards building a cinematic universe, but fortunately, the movie was a huge box office hit, paving the way for subsequent releases like Thor and Captain America. In classic Marvel style, Iron Man ended with a post-credits scene that had huge ramifications for future movies in the franchise, taking the first step towards the formation of a cohesive cinematic universe. After the events of the film, Tony Stark arrives home to find a stranger waiting for him, who quickly informs our vigilante that he's not the only superhero in the world. When Stark asks who the intruder is, the man replies that he's Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D," stating that "Im here to talk to you about The Avengers Initiative. This may seem like a relatively uneventful scene nowadays, but back when Iron Man was first released, this cameo established two extremely important things. First, this was Samuel L. Jackson's debut as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., who went on to sign a nine picture deal to continue in the role. Secondly, this cameo was the moment that Marvel finally confirmed that a movie starring The Avengers was actually going to become a reality and for Marvel fans everywhere, there was nothing more exciting than this. Whether you agreed or disagreed with Marvel's decision to base Nick Fury on the Ultimate version from the comics, it's hard to deny the charisma that Jackson brings to the role, making it hard to imagine anyone else wearing that signature eye patch.
