In the comics, Yondu's arrow was much the same as it is in the films. The primary difference, though, was that his comic yaka arrows were fired from an actual bow. In the films, he just pulls an arrow out of his jacket pocket like a vape pen, whistles a little tune, and unleashes absolute, unadulterated havoc, killing droves of people as the arrow rips through their bodies to a series of idiosyncratic whistles. It's quite fun.

Honestly, Yondu's arrow made him one of the most low-key dangerous people in the MCU. Think about it. It's basically a bullet, the trajectory of which he can change mid-air.

This wasn't confirmed in the films, but one has to assume that his ability to control the Yaka Arrow is what helped elevate him to a leadership position within the Ravagers. After all, Taserface (AKA Scrotumhat, which is only slightly more pitiful) knew that in order to secure his power, he needed to keep Yondu as far away from his fin - and his arrow - as possible. The moment Yondu got them both back, Taserface's reign came to an abrupt, brutal halt.
