10 Best Mission: Impossible Gadgets

2. The Masks

As the quintessential Mission: Impossible gadget, the masks have been a focal point of most of the films' missions, deceptions and twists since the original outing.

For the most part, the masks are made from a 3D printer and work like a second skin that is worn tight over the user's face, often providing them with identical features to the source. From prostheses that have made Tom Cruise look like he's out on a Jackass prank, to precision-cut masterpieces that really ought to have earned Philip Seymour Hoffman double-billing, the masks have substantially developed in quality and creative uses over the years.

Practicalities of head size and shape aside, they have kept Ethan Hunt and the IMF out of trouble and undercover across the globe for decades.

Each entry features their own rip off and reveal moment, but none is perhaps more shocking than M:i-2's double-bluff in which bad guy Sean Ambrose (Dougray Scott) guns down a captured and incoherent Ethan only to realise it is actually his henchman and best friend of sorts, Hugh Stamp (Richard Roxburgh), with his mouth duct taped under the mask.
