5. Bill Nighy As Davy Jones (Pirates Of The Caribbean)
By far and large Pirates of the Carribean franchise's greatest villain, Davy Jones was brought to life by sinister and spectacular fashion by the talented Bill Nighy as well as Oscar-winning visual effects work done by Industrial Lights and Magic (ILM). The VFX work was so well done that a handful of reviewers mistakenly assumed that the effects work was practical in nature.
His cephalopod and crustacean-inspired design was a suitable fit for the maritime theme of the franchise, but Nighy's formidable screen presence (as well as outstanding effects work) really gave the villain gravitas and tangibility, even when proceedings in the movies got decidedly more outlandish.
Nighy imbued Jones with memorable characteristics such as a thick Scottish accent (to account for his lack of a nasal cavity) and his eyes were used in the character's final design for effective expressiveness as well as giving the character the proper lighting in various scenes.
