8. The Martian

Panic Room (2002)
20th Century Fox

Not satisfied with home isolation, Matt Damon takes himself all the way to Mars in this 2015 movie about extreme social-distancing. Left stranded after a violent storm, he has to use all his ingenuity (and a good dollop of his own poop) to survive while NASA races to find a way to bring him home.

Based on a 2011 novel of the same name, the film was well-received by critics and fans alike. Director Ridley Scott pulls out all the stops to make the science seem credible and the tension almost palpable.

The contrast between the crowded scenes on Earth and the bleakness of the Martian landscape (filmed on location at Wadi Rum in Jordan) is especially effective at highlighting Damon's isolation. Plus the spacesuits look really cool.
