5. Withnail And I

Panic Room (2002)
Handmade Films

A rural retreat goes hilariously wrong in this cult classic from 1987 starring Richard E Grant and Paul McGann.

Set at the bitter end of the '60s, two out-of-work actors try to shake their dissolute lifestyles with a spell of countryside isolation but don't reckon with menacing poachers, their own utter lack of practical skills and Withnail's lecherous Uncle Monty ("As a youth, I I used to weep in butchers' shops" - an outstanding performance from the late Richard Griffiths).

Packed with quotable lines and mesmerising performances, this should be required viewing for anyone who's ever felt desperate enough to consider drinking lighter fluid...
