There's "shelter-in-place" and then there's "shelter-in-a-mysterious-bunker-with-John-Goodman-and another-dude-who-are-convinced-the-world-is-no-longer-habitable-and-well-maybe-it-isn't." The biggest difference is perhaps that the latter makes a really excellent movie.
When Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes from a car crash to find herself chained in a basement, her captor assures her that it's for her own protection since the outside world has been devastated and irradiated by a mysterious attack. Is he lying? Will she escape? Should she escape?
Although it wasn't universally acclaimed and the "twist" ending in particular left critics and fans deeply divided, the claustrophobic atmosphere and tense interactions between the three leads more than make up for any flaws. There may not be much scenery on view but John Goodman munches his way through all of it it in his greatest role for years, playing an eccentric survivalist who may or may not have everyone's best interests at heart.
