10 Best Movie Moments Of 2014 (So Far)

1. Car Chase - The Raid 2

The Raid 2 may have been a little too long and derivative of countless crime thrillers over the last few decades, but for the most part it upped the ante in every way that an action film possibly could. Scrapping the confined setting of the original movie, The Raid 2 is a sprawling action epic spread throughout Jakarta, and director Gareth Evans even throws in a car chase for good measure. We've all seen so many car chases over the years that directors often find it difficult to distinguish themselves from the pack, though Evans evidently didn't have that problem in this jaw-dropping scene. The scene begins as Rama (Iko Uwais) is held hostage inside a car, when his phone rings and he realises that Eka is attempting to rescue him. This causes a fully-fledged martial arts fight to break out in the car, as Rama beats the living snot out of every passenger, all while the car still moves at high-speed. This is a mind-blowingly brutal scene which has just about everyone you could want: cars being hurled around like toys, guns being fired, men being violently ejected from fast-moving cars, and it's all brought home with outstanding technical precision. Easily the best shot in the scene (and in the whole movie) involves the camera being passed through a car and out the other side: it was achieved using three camera operators, and you absolutely must take a look at this stunning behind-the-scenes video. The movie's plot may have been a tad dubious, but there's no doubting the incredible action Evans delivered, and we can't wait to see how he can reinvent himself once again for The Raid 3.
