10 Best Movie Posters Of 2017

Perhaps it isn't a dying art form after all?

2017 was a good year for cinema. All the way across the spectrum, from the art houses to the multiplexes, there was no shortage of inventive, impassioned work, and while complaints could be made about the dominance of franchise-based blockbusters, even there some true gems could be found.

How, then, did 2017's movie poster art measure up? While the merits of modern cinema are always open to heated debate, there generally seems rather less argument in recent years when it comes to posters; just about everyone agrees that, compared to those of years gone by, they stink. Where once we had beautiful hand-painted works galore, many of which could be comfortably declared genuine art, nowadays it's nothing but clunky, nondescript Photoshop jobs, right?

Well, certainly this is the case a lot of the time, but in the midst all that, some real beauties still pop up here and there, which perfectly convey the spirit of the films they're designed to sell - or, in some instances, prove to be even better than the film itself.

Here are the movie posters which caught our attention and dazzled our eye above all others in 2017.

10. Get Out

One of the year's most talked-about films, comedian Jordan Peele's debut as writer-director proved to be an impeccable balance between commercial accessibility and critic-pleasing sophistication. While the horror genre has frequently dealt with complex sociopolitical questions, this has rarely been quite so overt as it is in Get Out, which tackles the current state of race relations in the US in a truly eye-opening manner.

This arresting poster is an ideal representation of the film. The blunt contrast of black and white clearly reflects the key themes - and beyond that, it's a tremendously atmospheric, eerie image, evoking the unnervingly weird mood of Peele's film overall, including but not limited to the pivotal scene it references.

The poster also leaves us with no mistake that the hitherto largely unknown Daniel Kaluuya is absolutely the star of the show here. Get Out's success owes a lot to his powerhouse central performance, and further major roles must be in the offing for this talented young British actor.

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
