The Film: Adapted from the Thomas Pynchon novel of the same name, Inherent Vice is a drug-fuelled 70s extravaganza, a collision of multiple story strands that is entirely conscious of its often incoherent plot. On the surface, it's about a man named Larry Sportello (played brilliantly by Joaquin Phoenix) investigating the disappearance of a previous girlfriend. The Soundtrack: The soundtrack is helmed by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead fame. Greenwood has collaborated with director Paul Thomas Anderson for his last few films, spawning several stunning soundtracks (including the soundtrack for There Will Be Blood, cruelly robbed of an Oscar nod due to a technicality involving sampling). His music for Inherent Vice, then, is no different gorgeously portraying a smoky, atmospheric setting. Not only that, but Greenwood teamed up with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in order to give the music a more grandiose sound. The stand out moment, however, has to be the performance of a Radiohead-written track titled Spooks. Best Track: Spooks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePdOZ0bmoY0
