Ask a roomful of moviegoers, be they wearied critics or casual fans, to name their favourite ever popcorn flick and chances are Back To The Future comes up pretty sharpish. And if it doesn’t… leave.

On 21 October last year – the day Marty McFly is whisked away to by Doc Brown at the end of the first movie – the world celebrated Back To The Future Day. Okay, maybe 'the world' is a slight exaggeration but the outpouring of affection on social media and beyond made it clear exactly how cherished these movies are.

The first film arrived in 1985, fresh-faced late replacement Michael J. Fox pulling double duty filming Family Ties by day then being rushed to set to play Marty by night and on weekends. The result was a perfect slice of cinema that became the highest-grossing film of the year.

Back To The Future Part II, a darker tale which hit theatres in 1989, saw Doc and Marty jumping between 2015, 1985 and 1955, boldly building the first film's narrative into its third act until Doc is zapped back to 1885 and the Western setting of Part III. It's hard to make an argument for either being on a par with the first BTTF film but plenty would go to battle making a case for one over the other.

Back To The Future probably wouldn’t get made today. And that really makes you think.

I watch movies and I watch sport. I also watch movies about sport, and if there were a sport about movies I'd watch that too. The internet was the closest thing I could find.
