7. The Incredibles

Apollo 13 Feat 2

With the titular group of superheroes banding together to defeat Syndrome and save the day, The Incredibles is presented as a happy, upbeat story about the importance of family, and how working together is far better than going it alone. But if you look at it from the villain's point of view, it's actually quite tragic.

Before he became the supervillain known as Syndrome, Buddy was a die-hard fan of "supers" like Mr. Incredible, and wanted nothing more than to become a beloved hero himself. That dream took a hit when Mr. Incredible rejected the idea of the pair forming a team, leading to Buddy resenting his former role model and dedicating his life to becoming a more respected super than Mr. Incredible ever was.

As Syndrome, Buddy does get to live this heroic dream for a brief moment, successfully fighting his own Omnidroid in front of dozens of civilian onlookers. However, this glory is short-lived: he's defeated, embarrassed, and later dies horribly, after being sucked into a jet turbine and shredded.

You could argue that if Mr. Incredible had been a bit more caring towards young Buddy, that his death - and the deaths of dozens of other supers - could have been prevented. Then again, you could also argue that Buddy was a psychopath with an unrealistic dream, so take the film as you will.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
