10 Best Movies Based On Dark Horse Comics

7. Sin City

“This isn’t an adaptation of a comic book,” claimed Roger Ebert, “it’s like a comic book brought to life and pumped up with steroids.”

You wouldn’t claim that Frank Miller’s source tales were aiming at profundity any more than you’d claim this adaptation of several of his vignettes (directed by Miller and Robert Rodriguez, with a little help from Quentin Tarantino) has hidden depths, but the style of both must be conceded.

Drawn in black and white, the stories take place in a noir-ish city where the men wear hats and raincoats, the women are tough-talking dames and the streets are always slick with rain, and this movie movie captures that look perfectly.

Brought to life by a cast that includes Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke and Clive Owen, Sin City is a litmus test for those who prefer form over content. The look is so distinctive, the pacing so snappy and the performances so engaging that you forget there’s less to the film than meets the eye.
