10 Best Movies Based On Dark Horse Comics

6. 300

In Watchmen, Zack Snyder gave us a noisy, overlong comic book adaptation that polarized audiences. In Man Of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, he gave us a pair of noisy, overlong comic book adaptations that polarized audiences. As a director, Snyder is nothing if not consistent, but if it’s a relatively restrained comic book movie you want, try 300.

Based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel (itself inspired by the heroic Greek stand against the Persian army at Thermopylae), 300 is your average pumped-up, in-your-face cross between Lord Of The Rings and a music video. Gerard Butler has rarely been more commanding (or quotable) than he is here, leading a group of unfeasibly buff Spartans against Xerxes of Persia, who looks decidedly campier than his real-life counterpart.

Then again, the film is less interested in giving you a history lesson than in delivering two thunderous hours of testosterone-soaked entertainment, at which it succeeds. And it’s far more engaging than 300: Rise Of An Empire, despite also being based on a Miller graphic novel.
